Galaxy suffer a fourth consecutive loss, falling to the Colorado Rapids

CARSON >> Life without Zlatan Ibrahimovic didn’t get off to a good start for the Galaxy.

Ibrahimovic served the first of a two-game suspension for violent conduct stemming from an incident last week against New York City FC. Ibrahimovic will also miss Friday’s game at Orlando City SC.

Sunday, the Galaxy created chances, weathered a few missed opportunities by the Colorado Rapids, but that changed in the 82nd minute.

Andre Shinyashiki knocked home the rebound of a shot initially saved by Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham for the only goal in the Rapids’ 1-0 win in front of 19,015 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

The loss is the fourth consecutive for the Galaxy after starting the season 7-1-1.

At times it appeared that the Rapids, who entered the game with just two points, weren’t going to be able to put the finishing touches on a goal.

Galaxy defender Pipo Gonzalez bailed out the Galaxy in the 67th minute, racing back to clear a shot by Colorado Sam Nicholson off of the line to keep the game scoreless.

In the first half, Jonathan Lewis got in on a 1-on-1 against David Bingham, but he missed the target and twice in the second half, Kei Kamara had decent chances, but one was skied high from inside the penalty area and another hit the post.

In the 80th minute, Bingham came up with a save on Tommy Smith, who the ball fall at his feet off of a corner kick, but Bingham was able to scurry back and cover the near post.

The Galaxy had a lively start in the first half, but was unable to get anything by Colorado goalkeeper Tim Howard. Favio Alvarez, making his Galaxy debut, had a pair of shots on target, that Howard was able to take care of.
